Essential Oil Building Blocks: Monoterpenes

Hello there!

Today.. some organic chemistry! And a little bit for the "why" and "how" brains out there :)

Monoterpenes!

Essential oils are made up of smaller molecules called Terpenes. Two types of terpenes commonly found in essential oils are Monoterpenes and Sesquiterpenes.

Monoterpenes are smaller (with a 10-carbon backbone structure), which allows them to pass through the membranes of our cells! This means these amazing molecules have the potential to interact with our cells in many powerful and supportive ways.

Much like what the oils do for the plants from which they come, they can do for us too. Supporting healthy cellular function and communication are just a few examples!

A few oils to consider.. both found in the doTERRA Adaptiv Blend, are Wild Orange and Lavender.

Wild Orange is high in a type of monoterpene that support the uplifting of our moods and soothing of anxiety/tension.

Lavender is high in a few types of monoterpenes that support calming, grounding, and soothing.

I have found the doTERRA Essential Oil Chemistry Handbook to be an incredible resource for learning the basics I'm describing above. Find it here: https://www.doterra.com/…/science-research-news-oil-chemist…
